This blog has sat on the back of the stove, as if forgotten. Fermentation did not improve anything and so it has known the Delete button, start again. I sit at my desk now looking out on the harbour in its autumn colours. An autumn sky scuds overhead and I ponder a thought about places in town where the streets are paved with flattened squirrels that couldn’t make a decision. Still I sit.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, a second day of azure blue cloudlessness. The gringo boats are gone now. Cautiously I peck out a line, then another. This day is grey and dark damp. The low overcast only clears just at sundown. Gee thanks. Tonight a television debate between our three prime provincial candidates. What do you call an election when there’s no-one to vote for? My deep grief! I remember a punchline when an old native shepherd chief says “Sheep lie.” Says it all I think. I believe our deep apathy is about to bring us some slap therapy which we’ve worked long and hard to earn. My God! Are these best political specimans for Premier that we’ve got? I’ve said too much! Please, please vote! Get them outta here.
I’ve tried to live in recent years without being at sea in any way. But the calling in my blood screams on loudly and I’ve got to get back out there. Anything to do with ocean whispers to me. Sitting at this desk looking out into the harbour can be a killer. The dogs and I went for a walk at the local fish hatchery. Two days ago I thought I’d seen one coho. Today I saw a dozen. They’re back! Despite drought water levels they’ve found their way home. Once again the miracle is complete. That has to lift one’s heart.

Jill pointed out to me that it is the second year anniversary since we moved in to this house. Already! That day was memorable for its rain. A fine drizzle began in the morning and turned into an ever-increasing biblical torrent that bounced almost knee-high. The driveway was a rushing river and the moving crew proved a noble squad of soldiers. Two years to the day the leaves are turning and falling. It is very dry. The temperature is down to five degrees C this morning. There has been one serious day of rain all summer. It is beautiful out there, like being in an E. J. Hughes painting. Remember it is also autumn in the Ukraine and in Gaza.

Nobody is shooting at us, yet, we are still having free elections albeit with no-one viable to vote for. The best thing of all is that while we live in one of the nicest areas on the planet, if we are truly unhappy, we are free to leave. Be sure to buy a return ticket…just in case. Ya think?
